Week 8 bonus challenge

GIVE UP AN UNHEALTHY HABIT

After quite a few weeks on this challenge, we have all figured out how to eat around the rules. You know what I mean. We aren't being totally healthy, but we aren't losing any points, either. So this week, you get to decide what your favorite unhealthy habit is, and you get to live without it for one week.

I couldn't name all of the possibilities, but I will list a few options. Maybe you have a particular bad habit such as eating second helpings when you aren't hungry, finishing off your kids' meals, munching while distracted, or eating on the run. Maybe you snack too much between meals or after dinner. Maybe eating out is sabotaging your healthy lifestyle. Perhaps your body would be better off without a particular food because you can't seem to resist it: soda pop, margarine/butter, nuts, mayonnaise, granola bars, french fries, caffeine, cheese, chips/crackers, salad dressings, bread, sugar cereals. Or maybe entire groups of food are your nemesis such as those containing white flour or sugar/corn syrup.

Your unhealthy habit could also be exercise related. Perhaps you are taking it easy during your workouts instead of really pushing yourself and working out hard every time. Or maybe you are doing the same workout every day and have found yourself in a rut and making very little progress.

I don't know what's preventing you from being really successful on this challenge, but you do. Take a good look at your daily routine and decide what is holding you back and then eliminate it. When choosing what you'll eliminate, don't be too easy on yourself, but also don't make it impossible. And remember that you only have to live without it for one week!

This week you get 2 points for telling a team member what your unhealthy habit is and 4 points per day that you successfully eliminate it for a total of 30 points.

As always, there is a journal question to answer this time as well. Completing this portion of the challenge is worth 5 points. The questions are:

What did you learn about yourself through participating in this challenge?
Where you surprised by the things you discovered?

POINTS BREAKDOWN

Telling a teammate = 2 pts

Giving up habit 7 days x 4 pts = 28 pts

Journal Question = 5 pts

TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE = 35 POINTS

I also wanted to thank you all for participating in my challenge. We are getting ready for a hurricane and might be without internet service next week. We have a generator so we will have power to a few of our electric toys but not many. We will keep our fridge plugged in as well as our microwave. We will also have at least one of our MythTV computers working so we can at least watch a movie and eat popcorn :) I will add our contact plans up on MyFamily. Happy weekend everyone!!

  1. I can do this bonus. And I'm going to tell all my teammates right here what I'm going to give up--fried foods, i.e. french fries, potato chips, and anything in those categories.

  2. Ohh, fried foods is a good one, but I decided on exercising more vigorously. Rachel and I have belly danced, party cardio, walked 2 miles and more this week. We are ON IT!!!

  3. I am going to do an increase in exercise this week too. That makes it hard to consider giving up an unhealthy habit but I guess the unhealthy habit is not enough exercise. I had started doing the CrossFit exercises but last week I got a bit lax because of my preparations for the hurricane. This week I am going to do it Mon-Fri plus walk Thor.

  4. On the journal entry--does that mean what we learned during the 8 weeks of the wellness challenge, or what we learned during the week 8 bonus? (Did I just confuse everyone?)

  5. What we learned about both but focus more on the challenge itself instead of the bonuses.

  6. Ok, here's my journal entry. I learned that I want to eat right, exercise, and be healthy, but I often choose sweets instead of fruits and veggies. The challenge helped me choose fewer sweets and more fruits and veggies. I also learned that I'm no good at exercising just for the sake of exercising. I like to get my exercise doing real-life things like swimming and yard work. So on days when I don't do those things, I don't get much exercise. I eat better when I'm accountable for the points. I really messed up the last half of week 7. We'll see if I do better this week... It's been fun doing this challenge with everyone, and I look forward to the next challenge! (Preferably without the bonuses.)
