Serving Sizes???
I keep getting confused and just want clarification for myself and anyone else who might want some. It seems to me the serving sizes on packages in 2 times what it is on the USDA website. For example, on my bag of salad it says that a serving size is 2 cups. On the USDA is says leafy greens are 1 cup per serving. I have found the same discrepancy on bags of baby carrots, frozen fruit. I have been going with the USDA recommended serving size (which is pretty much 1/2 cup per serving for fruits and veggies with the exception of lettuce-type products). Am I doing this correctly?? Am I the only one who has noticed this or found this confusing?? And is someone trying to make me overeat by mismarking their packages?? (OK, OK, I won't get into the conspiracy theories about food companies trying to make us fat...)

I would go by the USDA website for serving sizes. I believe that is what Blenda has on her diabetes diet chart too. That is how I have been figuring mine out as well. What does everyone else think?

Diane, you are correct about the labels! Part of my diabetes training was teaching us serving sizes. They mentioned how labels are often deceiving. Use the recommendations on the USDA website. For example, did you know a serving of fruit is 60 calories and 15 carbs? Well, if you buy one of the those big apples in the store, that is actually two servings. One serving of fruit is 1/2 cup juice, 1/2 apple or banana, just a couple of tablespoons of raisins (I think two). Anyway, you get the idea. A serving size is a lot less than the average American eats.
